Founded in 1987 by Chuck Grouws, CHG Building Systems, Inc. specializes in steel erection, metal buildings and seismic retrofitting throughout the Western United States and Alaska. Headquartered in Renton, Washington, CHG has been recognized as a “Top 100 Builder” for Varco Pruden Buildings annually by Metal Construction News. CHG also erects for other contractors.
Indicators of CHG’s success in the construction industry include the fact that they have erected over five million square feet of building systems projects in the past 10 years. Along the way they have earned seven VP Hall of Fame Awards and multiple Associated Builders and Contractors awards. In 2012 CHG won national attention with a Best Projects award from Engineering News Record (ENR) for the City of Tacoma Recovery Transfer Center. Collectively, this tells the story of a very successful VP Builder.
The CHG/VP relationship came about in a strange way; as part of a payment agreement on a project in 1999. The existing VP builder was closing his doors and in lieu of final payment on a project, CHG received everything they needed, including his UNIX VP Command machine, to hit the ground running as a VP Builder. A relationship CHG has never looked back on.
As the second generation of the business unfolds, Steve Grouws, Vice President of Operations handles the day to day responsibilities of management and scheduling field supervision. With his 15 years of experience and as a certified crane operator, Steve brings his hands-on knowledge of hoisting to the project ensuring that the safest methods are being implemented.
Two other key team members, Mike McDonald, Architectural Sheet Metal Project Manager and Jeff Cook, Operations Manager each bring 35 years of steel construction experience. Mike and Jeff are both heavily involved in CHG projects, from concept to completion - ensuring another quality, on time, within budget project from CHG.
In describing his connection with Varco Pruden Buildings, Ryan Grouws, Metal Building Project Manager, stated that he and the CHG Team, “ feel that George Borba and the entire Turlock Team are an extension of their our own staff”. Further and perhaps the best compliment a customer can give his supplier, “VP’s commitment to CHG has been as much of a key to our success as our own people”.
